La migración no es un fenómeno nuevo, hace parte de la condición y de la historia de la especie humana. Sin embargo, enfrentamos un pico migratorio: en 2013 había 232 millones de personas en condición de migrantes y en 2019 la cifra incrementó a 270 millones en todo el mundo. Las dimensiones de este acontecimiento explican su relevancia y lo convierten en una prioridad en la agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible y sus Objetivos (ODS). Entender sus causas y consecuencias y visibilizar su potencial para el crecimiento y desarrollo sostenible permite ofrecer enfoques diferentes para su cobertura periodística, invita a revisar nuevos puntos de vista en términos de gobernanza y contribuye a la prevención de la xenofobia, el racismo y la discriminación. En este espacio del Festival Gabo Nº8, Leonard Doyle, vocero de la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (OIM), y Eileen Truax, periodista mexicana especializada en política, inmigración y movimientos sociales, conversarán sobre los retos para narrar la migración, la importancia de reconocer la contribución positiva de sus protagonistas y el impacto de sus relatos en la agenda global.

Changing the narrative on migration

Migration is not a new phenomenon. It is an essential part of the human condition and history of humanity. However, we are facing a migratory peak: in 2013, there were 232 million migrants while in 2019 the figure rose to 270 million worldwide. The extent of this phenomenon explains its relevance and makes it a priority in the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Understanding its causes and consequences and envisioning its potential for growth and sustainable development opens the door for alternative approaches for journalistic coverage of the matter, encourages us to explore new points of view in terms of governance, and contributes to the prevention of xenophobia, racism, and discrimination. In this session of the 8th edition of the Gabo Festival, Leonard Doyle, spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and Eileen Truax, Mexican journalist specializing in politics, immigration, and social movements, will discuss the challenges of narrating migration, the importance of recognizing its protagonists’ positive contributions, and the impact of their stories on the global agenda.
